Navigate Brightspace Learning Environment
- Minibar - The minibar is always present and allows you to navigate withint CELO+ Brightspace Learning Environment
- My Home / CDU CELO+ logo - you may click this to return to the homepage
- Course selector - Use the course selector to access your courses
- Upon logging in, you will see 2 ready made courses:
- Instructor's Lounge (important to know!!!!!!! NOT IN THE VIDEO!!!!!!)
- The instructor's lounge exists as an announcement page for the school to all instructors. Only Administrators and Instructors can access this page. Learners would not be able to see this. As of now, it doesn't contain anything yet, but in the future, we can check the instructor lounge for further announcements.
- [your name] Sandbox (Important to know!!!!!NOT IN THE VIDEO!!!!!!!)
- The sandbox is your very own practice space. This is where you can practice the tutorials and set up your course / department program. Take note that when you practice in sandbox, this is only accessible to you and you alone. Your students nor your co-instructors will be able to see your Sandbox. As of this tutorial, you are free to set it up with anything you want.
A Sandbox is a personal environment where you can experiment with Brightspace. You have access to all necessary functionalities, and can try them out without possible unwanted consequences for yourself or your students. The Sandbox is private: only you and the colleagues you have enrolled can view its content.
- The Sandbox is a useful tool that will help you get used to Brightspace. You can, for example, experiment with new ways to present your content, create new tests for students and discover ways to improve interaction with students. You can also prepare a course in your Sandbox and export it to a public course when satisfied.
- You may ask: "What about my course?" (Important to know!!!!NOT IN THE VIDEO!!!!!!!!!)
- Your course will become available online once the schools' CELO+ admin has made the courses available to everyone. This may start on July or August 2020. We will inform you when it will be available.
- Alert Icons
- There are three alert icons on the minibar, right next to the course selector.
- Unread mail / Unread instant messages
- Updates alert - which notifies you about new announcement items, due dates and end dates, and grades.
- Subscriptions alert - It also notifies you of new blog posts, subscribed discussions forums, topics and threads.
- Take note that ALERT ICONS that pop up here are only alerts from emails and instant messages within CELO+ Brightspace Learning Environment. Notifications from your personal/school email accounts will NOT appear hear.
- [Your Name] - This will show your personal Menu
- This will let you edit user specific settings including your Profile, Notifications, and Account Settings. You can aslo logout of Brightspace from your personal menu.
- NAVBAR - The navbar provides links to course specific tools.
- Course Homepage - This is what you see when you log in to CELO+ and contains the following:
- Announcements - which you as the instructor can post anything related to your course/program for your learners to see.
- Calendar - this will let you see the agenda for the day/week/month.You and your learners will be able to see this.

Your personal homepage
When you log in to Brightspace your homepage will be the first page you land on. Every personal homepage has the same layout (regardless of whether you are a student or a teacher).
- MY COURSES (bottom left corner of the image above): Here you will see an overview of a total of twelve courses you have last accessed (the picture i have is only 2 courses as these are the ones available as of now).
- For some courses you will see icons with a number in an orange square. These icons represent Activities (Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes). The number in the orange square shows how many unread items you have within that activity. For example, the number beside the document icon represents the number of unread submitted files from students.
- Click on the name of the course to open it.
- Click on View All Courses to see all courses.
- Central notifications, like maintenance of web lectures or Turnitin will be shown under Announcements (announcements for specific courses will not be shown here). By clicking the close button in the upper right corner of the notification you will dismiss (and thereby archive) the notification. Click on Announcements or Show All Announcements to view all active and archived (dismissed) announcements.
- Activities from all your courses will be displayed in your Calendar. Clicking Upcoming Events will reveal a list of activities. Click on Calendar to open the calendar.
Course Home
Navigating to a course:
- On your homepage you can click on a course. This will bring you to the Course Home.
- Another way is to select a course in the Course Selector. This will also bring you to the Course home.
- In your course home, you will see the following:

- The title of the course is shown in the Course Banner. The Course Banner allows you to personalize your course and make it easier to find and recognize by both you and your students.
- Announcements will show you all notifications specific to the course. You can communicate with students via announcements, prior or during the course.
- Activities of the course, like deadlines, meetings and reading materials are shown in the Calendar.
- Table of Contents will show the lessons you have created under the "content" tab in the navbar.
- Content: in which the course material is located and divided into units.We will learn to create content in another topic.
- Assignments: in which we can assign learners to submit assignments.
- Discussions: This activity will simulate a online forums.
- Quizzes: All quizzes for learners will be listed here along with all the options.
- Classlist: This includes the learners, along with all the co-instructors and clinical perceptors inside the course.
- Grades: You will be able to access the grades of the learners.
- Class Progress:
- Course Tools: you will see here additional tools that we can use: Announcements page, checklist, groups, quizzes, virtual classroom, video assignments, surveys (which we will tackle one by one).
