INTRODUCTION

Good day doctors!

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected educational systems worldwide, leading to the near-total closures of schools, universities and colleges. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of COVID-19, and the Philippines is definitely not an exemption.

In the advent of this pandemic, the school and its faculty opted to adapt to the latest and most available learning tools to reach out to the students and provide an alternative learning environment, in the form of eLearning or electronic Learning.

BRIGHTSPACE

In order to facilitate an eLearning environment, the school had to use a Learning Management System (LMS) software. An LMS is a web based system that helps us accommodate all our learning materials to one place and have it available to all the learners (You can learn more about LMS by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezbJwaLmOeM). An example of LMS you may be familiar with is Google Classroom.


                               


The LMS CDU will be using Brightspace by D2L. D2L is a global software company with offices in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Europe, and Brazil. It is the developer of the Brightspace learning management system which is a cloud-based software used by schools, higher education, and businesses for online and blended classroom learning (You can learn more about Brightspace by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWFqCrRhYws).


CELO+

     CELO+ is the name of the CDU’s own LMS created by Brightspace D2L. This is the official name of the website that the school will be using to manage students. This is a secure website where faculty and students will need to login every time they access school/internship related content. This is also where we add our content for students to see.


TUTORIALS

This website (https://cducmbrightspacetutorial.blogspot.com) was created to cater to Brightspace CELO+ Tutorial Training, focusing on step by step tutorials on each topic and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). There will be some video training accompanied by step by step instructions of each topic we are going to tackle in the coming days. Each topic will also have definition of terms  to help you better understand Brightspace terminology. You may also use this website for any questions, comments, concerns and suggestions for the benefit of our training program. This website will also serve as a repository for when you need to review certain steps again in the future.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

 “Why is there a need to use a different LMS like Brightspace, when we can make use of Google Classroom to which we are already familiar with?” 

While it is true that most of the clinical preceptors are already familiar with Google Classroom, Brightspace offers more functionality, reliability, flexibility and security all in one package. Brightspace may be able to cater better to the internship programs specific to your department. Although, I will be training you about Brightspace, we are still allowed to use Google classroom in conjunction with Brightspace. So there should be no worries.

 “What are the functions that Brightspace can offer?

 Some options that you would find interesting would be:

  • Host Small group discussions held via video conferences
  • Upload pre-recorded lectures, or hold live lectures and upload a recording after
  • Upload course materials for each year level
  • Make announcements
  • Host Clinico-Pathologic Conference’s, Case Discussions, or Lectures/Lecturettes in the form of video conferences using Zoom, Google Meet or Brightspace Bongo apps.
  • Create quizzes, assignments, and reflection papers for interns to submit on time and readily be accessible to you for grading.
  • Evaluate/Assess interns more easy and secure.
  • ePortfolio management.
